The modern-day hot tub’s has evolved from “fun and bubbles”, into a wellness product enhancing every aspect of our daily lives. Overall, hot tubs require very little maintenance. However every 4 to 6 years owners face the reality of replacing the hot tubs cover. Cover replacement is unavoidable because it degrades with time. Furthermore, covers play an important role in maintaining water health and guard against high energy bills. Below are tips to significantly extend your hot tub cover life.
What Causes Cover Degradation?
Cover degradation occurs in two ways; the exterior becomes dry and brittle, and the foam core slowly absorbs moisture. In addition, poor cover maintenance, excessive dirt and dust, extreme weather conditions, and animals all shorten a covers life. The good news in all of this is there are things you can do to significantly extend the life of your hot tub cover.
Use “303” to Extend Cover Life
As a hot tub expert, my first recommendation is to purchase a good quality non-alcohol spa cover protectant. In fact, I highly recommend “303” for its all-around protection qualities. Simply clean your cover with a mild soap and water solution to remove debris, rinse, and dry thoroughly. Apply the 303 every two weeks in summer months, and once a month in fall, winter, and spring. At this interval, the 303 will work into the material and offer maximum weather and UV protection.
Should I Use a Cover Lifter?
My second recommendation to extend cover life is a cover lifter. If you do not currently have a cover lifter, this is a “must have” hot tub accessory. Not only does a cover lifter make the user experience easier, but it also significantly increases cover life. A cute analogy would be your car tires would never wear out if they never touched the ground. Not quite the same, but you get the picture.
Under the Hot Tub Cover
Finally, the underside of a hot tub cover is a forgotten after-thought, if that’s even a thing. The covers underside is in that limbo space of not being in the water, and not in contact with fresh air. This condition causes a slight odor and at times a touch of mold. This is remedied with a mild chlorine solution sprayed on the underside of the cover.
