The Pros and Cons of Buying a Hot Tub from a Big Box Store

When it comes to buying a hot tub, one option to consider is purchasing from a big box store. In our article, ‘The Pros and Cons of Buying a Hot Tub from a Big Box Store,’ we explore the various benefits and drawbacks of this choice. From specialized spa dealers to online marketplaces, each purchasing option has its own set of advantages and challenges.

A lot can be said about the benefits of shopping at big box stores and membership clubs. Usually the shopping experience is efficient, the prices feel lower, and the products are generally good quality (not to mention a certain store’s $1.50 hot dog).

But so often, new hot tub and spa owners find their way to our store to ask how to set up their hot tub, keep the water clean, or any other challenges a DIYer faces when starting out. Here’s why we love big box stores (and why we still think you should shop with us).

Convenience and Pricing

We’re well aware of how people shop: find the product you want for the lowest price possible. There’s no shame in bargain hunting and places like Costco will often beat us on price. Before you pull out that credit card, it’s important to look at what actually comes with your purchase.

First, we’ve long known that companies will offer different quality products to meet the price point of retailers. Clothing producers, for example, will adjust the materials to fit the price point of discount-pricing stores and send the higher-end stores the products with higher-end materials. The hot tub industry is similar. In fact, a hot tub offered in a big box store is layered with features to create perceived value. In stores that offer rock-bottom prices, a manufacturer will often sacrifice quality materials, or take shortcuts in order to maximize the low price point. While a hot tub at Blackthorne may appear like a more expensive copy of a big box store’s product–we focus on craftsmanship, materials, and quality without sacrifice.

Also, shoppers will most often find speed bumps with delivery, set-up, and maintenance guidance. It makes sense because these are stores that sell you everything from pies to clothing to appliances. When it comes to hot tubs, they’re not training experts to answer your questions and help you set it up. Typically, the store will deliver it to your driveway, but after that, you’re on your own to unpack the hot tub, move it to the right place, and actually get it going.

So I should pay a little more?

At Blackthorne, we specialize in quality wellness products on the California’s Central Coast. We’ve heard almost every question, performed installations for all kinds of spaces, and can even help find the right hot tub for your space, needs, and frequency of use.

While you might be getting a better short-term price elsewhere, you might actually be spending more time and money trying to get your hot tub properly set up and cared for. A lot of our long-time customers who have purchased at Big Box Store spa have said the same thing, “I should have come here first.”

If you’re thinking about going the DIY-route, here’s what to consider:

Set-up

Are you following local zoning laws? Is your space big enough for this hot tub? Is your base or deck level, and can it hold up 1-2 tons of weight?

Electric

Is your electrical up-to-date, and have enough power to support a new appliance? Are you going to hard-wire the electrical run, or simply plug into an outdoor outlet (and is the outlet weather-proofed?)

Water

Is your water soft or hard? How is the pH balance? Do you have the right products to treat your water and prevent scaling and staining? Do you prefer chlorine, bromine, or a more natural sanitizing option?

Trouble-shooting

Are you savvy enough to safely troubleshoot with the manufacturer over the phone? What happens if the hot tub has issues, needs a replacement part or needs to be repaired?

Shop Local

We love the deals and convenience of big box stores, but some products really should be purchased from experts. Would you buy a car from a mattress store? Spas and hot tubs are a speciality item–always shop with an expert.

Blackthorne has been serving central coast families since 1975. We’ve heard every question and fixed every issue on-site. While it may feel like local shops like us charge more–you always get what you pay for. Give us a call or stop by the store, we’ll help you find the right hot tub for your lifestyle and budget (or help you troubleshoot the one you got elsewhere).
